Family Travel Guides

Guides for parents arranging a child’s trip. Cruise lines, airlines, and destination countries set different rules, and not every letter needs a notary. Start with the carrier or country that applies to your trip.

How to browse this category

Airline, cruise, and government rules are not the same, and not every trip needs a notarized letter. Start with the guide for your cruise line, airline, or destination. Use a sample letter only when that recipient did not give you a form. Form DS-3053 is for a child’s U.S. passport, not for boarding a ship or a plane.

  • Cruise travel

Cruise lines do not use one shared consent rule. Open the guide for Royal Caribbean, Celebrity, Norwegian, MSC, Carnival, Disney, Princess, or Holland America, or start with the cruise comparison.

  • Airline travel

Airline rules and destination rules are different. Start with the international-flight overview, then open American Airlines, Delta, Frontier’s Canada documents, Air Canada, unaccompanied-minor forms, or a one-parent or grandparent flight.

  • International destinations

Some countries care about entry, some about exit, and some about both. Compare countries, then open Canada, the Bahamas, Jamaica, Mexico’s SAM process, the Dominican Republic, Costa Rica, South Africa, the United Kingdom, or Ireland.

  • Passport consent

Form DS-3053 is a U.S. passport consent form. It is not a cruise letter or an airline letter. Use the DS-3053 guide when that is the form you have.

  • Sample letters

Use the cruise line’s or government’s own form when one exists. The sample letters are generic examples for situations with no official form. A medical consent letter is a separate sample. None of these samples is an official document.

  • Already at the airport or cruise port

If someone just told you a document is missing, start with the airport guide or the cruise-port guide. Identify the document before you schedule a notarization.

Check child travel document requirements

Use the Child Travel Requirement Checker to compare carrier, country, and family-situation rules, then review the official form or government process when one exists.
