International Signer ID Options for Online Notarization

Country-specific guidance on possible platform-listed government photo ID categories for international biometric identity verification. A passport is usually strongest; listing an ID type does not guarantee approval.

Quick Answer

What ID options may international signers use for online notarization?

For many international signers, identity verification may be completed through platform-supported biometric identity verification instead of U.S.-style KBA. A passport is usually the strongest option, but depending on the ID-issuing country and the platform workflow, other current government-issued photo IDs such as national IDs, driver licenses, residency permits, consular IDs, voter IDs, or similar documents may be supported.

The ID must be current, government-issued, photo-bearing, readable, and must pass credential analysis and biometric or liveness verification. Listing an ID type does not guarantee approval, and receiving-party requirements still control.

iRemoteNotary helps signers complete eligible U.S. document notarizations online. Sessions are completed by commissioned notaries, and the signer does not need to be in the same location as the notary. International sessions commonly start at $50 for one signer and one notarization. Start at the international online notary hub when the document and credential look eligible.

Key Facts

ID-issuing country, physical location, citizenship, document eligibility, and recipient acceptance are separate questions.

QuestionAnswer
Primary international path?Often platform-supported biometric identity verification with credential analysis.
Strongest ID option?Usually a current passport when supported.
Other photo IDs?May be platform-listed by issuing country — not guaranteed.
U.S. SSN always required? Not necessarily for the supported international biometric workflow.
KBA never needed? No — title, lender, and some real estate closings may still require KBA.
Listing guarantees approval?No.
Recipient must accept RON?No — receiving-party requirements still control.

This guide answers a narrow question: given your ID-issuing country, which platform-listed government photo ID categories might be available for biometric identity verification — and what caveats apply?

It is not a substitute for the foreign passport guide, the no-SSN guide, or the KBA challenges guide. Those pages keep ownership of passport depth, SSN questions, and KBA failure education.

iRemoteNotary helps signers complete eligible U.S. document notarizations online. Sessions are completed by commissioned notaries, and the signer does not need to be in the same location as the notary.

Why International Signers Often Fail KBA

U.S.-style knowledge-based authentication often draws on U.S. credit or consumer-history data. International signers may lack a U.S. Social Security number, recent U.S. addresses, or enough domestic data for questions to generate or score correctly.

That pain point does not remove identity requirements. For many international sessions, the supported path is platform-supported biometric identity verification with credential analysis instead of treating U.S.-style KBA as the primary method.

Title companies, lenders, and some real estate closings may still require KBA depending on underwriter requirements. Read why international signers may have trouble passing KBA and KBA vs. biometrics, and for property files see notarizing U.S. real estate documents abroad.

How Platform-Supported Biometric Identity Verification Works

In a typical international biometric workflow, the signer presents a current government-issued photo ID for credential analysis. The platform evaluates authenticity and integrity signals on the credential.

The signer then completes a selfie or liveness check so the live person can be compared to the photo on the ID. After identity steps succeed, the signer meets commissioned notaries in a live audio-video session.

iRemoteNotary brands the service and session. Automated credential analysis and biometric checks run through the online notarization platform workflow and an approved identity verification processor. Successful verification is not guaranteed.

Passport Preferred, but Not Always the Only Possible Option

A passport is usually the strongest option for international identity verification when the platform can analyze it.

Depending on the ID-issuing country and the platform workflow, other current government-issued photo IDs — such as national IDs, driver licenses, residency permits, consular IDs, voter IDs, or similar documents — may be supported as platform-listed categories.

Do not assume that every foreign government document works. For passport-specific legal and technical depth, use Can I use a foreign passport for a U.S. online notarization?. This page focuses on foreign passport alternatives and country-level ID category discovery.

ID Requirements Before the Session

The ID must be current, government-issued, photo-bearing, readable, and must pass credential analysis and biometric or liveness verification. Listing an ID type does not guarantee approval, and receiving-party requirements still control.

  • Use a current, unexpired government-issued photo ID unless a specific process expressly provides otherwise.
  • Confirm the credential is photo-bearing, intact, and readable under good lighting.
  • Match the name on the ID as closely as practical to the name on the document — see name mismatch guidance when they differ.
  • Use a camera-enabled device and a stable internet connection.
  • Plan to present the physical credential for capture — a casual photo or email scan is not a substitute for the live identity workflow.
  • Confirm recipient acceptance of remote online notarization separately from identity readiness.

Country-Based ID Options Checker

Use the checker below as a preparation tool. Choose the country that issued the ID. That country may differ from where you are physically located and from citizenship.

A checker result is not approval. Credential analysis and biometric or liveness verification must still succeed, and receiving-party requirements still control.

There is no separate checker URL. The same guide keeps the featured country sections below for extra context.

This checker is a preparation tool. It uses the country that issued the ID, which may differ from where you are physically located. A result is not approval.

South Korea is not included in this ID-options checker while platform support and identity-verification requirements are being reviewed. This does not remove or change iRemoteNotary’s South Korea service information pages.

Select the country or territory that issued the credential, not the place where you are sitting today.

Choose your ID-issuing country to see possible platform-listed ID categories. This result is not an approval.

Before booking, tell us your physical location, ID-issuing country, ID type, whether the ID is current and photo-bearing, the document type, and who will receive the notarized document.

Top 20 Country ID Guide

The following countries are featured because of demand, diaspora volume, and common ID-category questions. Each section lists possible platform-listed ID categories to ask about — not guaranteed approvals.

Featured countries: Mexico, Canada, United Kingdom, Philippines, India, Japan, United Arab Emirates, Australia, Germany, France, Colombia, Brazil, Saudi Arabia, Spain, Italy, China, Vietnam, Thailand, Jamaica, Nigeria.

South Korea is not included in this ID-options checker while platform support and identity-verification requirements are being reviewed. This does not remove or change iRemoteNotary’s South Korea service information pages.

Mexico — international signer ID options

Possible platform-listed ID categories to ask about:

Mexican passports, INE credentials, and driver licenses come up often for U.S. document sessions involving signers connected to Mexico. For location-based questions about notarizing while physically in Mexico, see the Mexico international online notary page.

Organize questions by ID-issuing country, which may differ from where you are physically located and from citizenship.

A passport is usually the strongest option and may still be preferred or required by the receiving party even when other ID categories appear in a platform-listed set.

The ID must be current, government-issued, photo-bearing, readable, and must pass credential analysis and biometric or liveness verification. Listing an ID type does not guarantee approval, and receiving-party requirements still control.

Can I use a Mexican INE for online notarization?

Possibly, if the INE is current, photo-bearing, readable, and appears in the platform-listed categories for Mexico, and credential analysis plus biometric or liveness verification succeed. Listing does not guarantee approval.

Can I use a Mexican passport?

A Mexican passport is often the strongest option when supported. A passport is usually the strongest option and may still be preferred or required by the receiving party even when other ID categories appear in a platform-listed set. See foreign passport guidance.

Can I use a Mexican driver license?

Ask whether a Mexican driver license is among the platform-listed photo ID categories for that issuing country. It must still pass verification.

Does being in Mexico mean I need a U.S. SSN?

Not necessarily for the supported international biometric workflow. Read online notarization without a U.S. Social Security number.

Is location in Mexico the same as Mexican citizenship?

No. Physical location, citizenship, and ID-issuing country are separate questions.

  • Passport
  • National voter ID (INE) — if platform-listed as a current government photo ID
  • Driver license — if platform-listed

These categories are preparation prompts, not a guarantee that any listed type will pass credential analysis or biometric verification for your session.

Canada — international signer ID options

Possible platform-listed ID categories to ask about:

Canadian passports and provincial photo credentials are common questions for affidavits, powers of attorney, and other U.S. documents. For location-based questions about notarizing while physically in Canada, see the Canada international online notary page.

ID-Type Guide

The sections below explain common ID categories people ask about. Phrasing uses “may be available” and “ask about,” not guaranteed acceptance.

Passport

A passport is a government travel identity document with a photograph and identity data page.

It is usually the strongest credential for international online notarization identity checks.

Not every country’s passport is supported by every verification system. A valid passport does not guarantee verification or recipient acceptance.

People often search: “Do I need a passport for online notarization?”

National ID

A national ID is a domestic government photo identity card issued by a country to citizens or residents.

Common examples include German Personalausweis, French national ID, Spanish DNI, Colombian cédula, and Vietnamese CCCD.

May be platform-listed by issuing country. Listing does not guarantee approval.

People often search: “Can I use a national ID for online notarization?”

Driver License

A government-issued driving credential that includes a photograph.

Often asked about for Canada, Mexico, the United Kingdom, Australia, Brazil (CNH), and many other countries.

Must be current and photo-bearing. Ask whether the issuing country’s driver license category is platform-listed.

People often search: “Can I use a foreign driver license for online notarization?”

Residency Permit

A government residence or stay credential that identifies a person authorized to live in a country.

Common for EU residence permits, UK residence cards, and similar documents.

Only when it is a current government photo ID and platform-listed. Not every residence paper qualifies.

People often search: “Can I use a residency permit for online notarization?”

Permanent Resident Card

A long-term resident photo card issued by a government.

Appears when permanent residents need to notarize U.S.-related documents while abroad or without a U.S. passport.

Confirm the issuing country listing and that the card passes credential analysis and biometric verification.

People often search: “Can I use a permanent resident card for online notarization?”

Consular ID

An identity card issued by a consulate or embassy to nationals abroad.

Sometimes asked about as an alternative when a passport is unavailable.

Often limited or unsupported. Do not assume a consular ID will work merely because it is government-related.

People often search: “Can I use a consular ID for online notarization?”

Voter ID

An electoral identity credential; some countries issue photo voter cards that function like national IDs.

Mexico’s INE is a frequent example in search and intake questions.

Only photo-bearing, current, government-issued cards that are platform-listed may be candidates. Many voter documents are unsuitable.

People often search: “Can I use a voter ID for online notarization?”

Common Gulf expat identity question.

Ask whether Iqama is platform-listed and whether verification succeeds. Success is not guaranteed.

People often search: “Can I use an Iqama for online notarization?”

What to Send iRemoteNotary Before Booking

Before you request a session, gather the unsigned document, your physical location and timezone, the ID-issuing country, and the ID type you plan to use.

Confirm that the receiving organization will accept remote online notarization and the electronic format. For Form DS-3053, also review current embassy-country and ID-copy rules.

iRemoteNotary can review document and identification details before confirming a session. A pre-booking review is not the same as a platform pass. Credential analysis and biometric or liveness verification still must succeed in the live workflow.

The ID must be current, government-issued, photo-bearing, readable, and must pass credential analysis and biometric or liveness verification. Listing an ID type does not guarantee approval, and receiving-party requirements still control.

  • Unsigned document file
  • Signer location and timezone
  • ID-issuing country and intended ID type
  • Recipient acceptance confirmation
  • Any witness or special form instructions

Common Verification Failure Reasons

Identity verification can fail even with a genuine credential. Common issues include glare, blur, damaged IDs, expired credentials, unsupported ID types, inconsistent names, poor lighting, unstable internet, or a failed selfie or liveness check.

Retrying may help when capture quality was the problem. Success is still not guaranteed. Commissioned notaries cannot override a failed platform identity-verification result.

If the name on the ID and document do not match, read name mismatch on ID and document. If online notarization cannot proceed, compare alternatives in U.S. embassy vs. online notary.

  • Expired or unreadable ID
  • ID type not platform-listed
  • Failed credential analysis
  • Failed selfie or liveness check
  • Name mismatch between ID and document
  • Device, lighting, or network problems

Receiving-Party Requirements and Document Acceptance Caveats

Passing identity verification does not force a bank, title company, lender, court, government agency, school, recorder, or foreign office to accept the notarized document.

Receiving-party requirements still control. Ask before the session whether remote online notarization, electronic signatures, witnesses, originals, apostille, or authentication are required.

For abroad acceptance context, see whether a U.S. online notarization may be accepted in another country. For overseas property files, see U.S. real estate documents abroad. For general abroad execution steps, see notarizing U.S. documents while abroad.

The ID must be current, government-issued, photo-bearing, readable, and must pass credential analysis and biometric or liveness verification. Listing an ID type does not guarantee approval, and receiving-party requirements still control.

Frequently asked questions

Can I notarize online without a U.S. Social Security number?

Not necessarily. A U.S. Social Security number is not always required for iRemoteNotary’s supported international biometric identity-verification workflow. You still need a supported current government-issued photo ID, and verification can fail. See the dedicated guide on online notarization without a U.S. Social Security number for full detail.

Why does KBA fail for international signers?

U.S.-style KBA often depends on U.S. credit or history data that international signers may lack. Many international workflows instead use platform-supported biometric identity verification with credential analysis. Title, lender, and some real estate closings may still require KBA.

What is biometric identity verification?

Platform-supported biometric identity verification typically combines credential analysis of a government-issued photo ID with a selfie or liveness check that compares the live person to the ID photograph. Sessions are then completed by commissioned notaries in a live audio-video appearance.

Do I need a passport for online notarization?

A passport is usually the strongest option for international signers, but it is not always the only possible platform-listed category. Other current government-issued photo IDs may be available depending on the ID-issuing country and platform workflow. Listing does not guarantee approval.

Can I use a national ID instead of a passport?

Possibly, when the national ID is current, government-issued, photo-bearing, readable, platform-listed for that issuing country, and passes credential analysis and biometric or liveness verification.

Can I use a driver license from another country?

Possibly when that foreign driver license is platform-listed as a current government photo ID and verification succeeds. Success is not guaranteed.

Can I use a residency permit?

Possibly when it is a current government-issued photo credential and platform-listed. Not every residence document qualifies.

Can I use a consular ID?

Often limited or unsupported. Do not assume a consular ID will work. Ask before booking and prefer a passport or another clearly platform-listed government photo ID when available.

Does my ID need to be current?

Yes. Plan to use a current, unexpired government-issued photo credential unless a specific process expressly provides otherwise.

Does the ID need to have a photo?

Yes. International biometric identity verification depends on a photo-bearing government-issued credential that can be analyzed and compared during a selfie or liveness check.

Can I use an expired ID?

Usually no. An expired credential should not be treated as generally acceptable for remote online notarization identity verification.

Can I use a scan or photocopy of my ID?

A casual scan or emailed photo is not a substitute for presenting the physical credential in the live identity workflow. Some forms, such as DS-3053, separately require a photocopy for the receiving package — that is not the same as identity verification.

What if my ID is not in English?

Non-English credentials may still be usable when the platform can analyze them and verification succeeds. Support varies by credential and issuing country. Ask before booking if you are unsure.

What if my name does not match exactly?

A name mismatch does not automatically block every session, but identity must still be reasonably established and the recipient may reject the name format. See the name-mismatch ID guide before booking.

What if my ID upload fails?

Improve lighting, reduce glare, confirm the ID is current and intact, and retry if capture quality was the issue. Success is still not guaranteed. Commissioned notaries cannot override a failed platform result.

What if the selfie or liveness check fails?

Check lighting, camera permissions, and a stable connection, then retry if appropriate. A failed liveness check still means the session cannot proceed through that workflow until verification succeeds.

Can iRemoteNotary check my ID before booking?

You can share document and identification details for review before a session is confirmed. A pre-booking review is not a guarantee that credential analysis or biometric verification will pass in the live platform workflow.

Does passing ID verification guarantee document acceptance?

No. Receiving-party requirements still control. Banks, title companies, courts, agencies, and foreign offices may decline a remotely notarized document even after identity verification succeeds.

Ready to check your international ID options before booking?

The ID must be current, government-issued, photo-bearing, readable, and must pass credential analysis and biometric or liveness verification. Listing an ID type does not guarantee approval, and receiving-party requirements still control. Submit your unsigned document and identification details through the international online notary hub. Sessions are completed by commissioned notaries.
