During a lawful notarization, the notary generally verifies the identity of the person appearing before the notary and performs the requested notarial act on the document presented.
What the notary may verify:
• the signer's identity under applicable notary law
• that the signer personally appeared or appeared remotely as permitted
• that the signer signed or acknowledged the document as required by the chosen notarial act
What the notary does not verify:
• whether the student lived in the state long enough for in-state tuition
• whether the student's domicile claim is truthful
• whether tax, lease, employment, or voter records support the claim
• whether the college will classify the student as an in-state resident
• whether the form is the correct version for that institution
The college evaluates residency facts. The notary evaluates the notarial ceremony.
